KENYA: 12 Days in the African Bush with 4 Days on a Camel Walk

After being met at Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi on arrival, we will escort you to the Giraffe Manor, or Norfolk Hotel.

DAY 1, 2 & 3
Fly charter aircraft north-east to Meru National Park. Land at the foot of the Nyambeni Hills in dry bush country dotted with magnificent baobab trees and partitioned by bright green strips of riverine forest. Follow a red earth road to your private tented camp, set up especially for you in a lovely shady place. A few eventful days here will usually offer good viewing of the many huge herds of Cape buffalo, kongoni and zebra, as well as gerenuk, reticulated giraffe and the exquisite lesser kudu. Elephant can be seen and most often one will have a glimpse of a lion or other predator. The Tana River to the south, and others too, hold plenty of hippo and crocodile and the bird-life is nothing short of spectacular. Swim in delicious rocky pools during the heat of the day and siesta in the shade looking up through a delicate filigree of tamarind leaves. Enjoy a game drive in our very comfortable, well-equipped 4-wheel drive vehicles (there is cushioned seating even on the roof) and then back to camp for another delicious meal. Our food is quite cosmopolitan and many different tastes can be catered for. Only fresh fruit and vegetables are served. At night enjoy a sundowner by the camp fire and dinner under the stars before retiring to huge, insect-proof tents with comfortable double beds and sheets of finest Egyptian cotton.
THREE NIGHTS IN A PRIVATE TENTED CAMP,
MERU PARK

DAY 4, 5, 6 & 7
Leaving Meru National Park today we would head off into the Northern Frontier District. Here we begin our walk with the camels. Our first 'fly camp' would be set up on the edge of a huge sand river. For the next few days we would explore this area, leaving in the cool of the early morning with the camels packed up carrying everything we need. Being on foot gives one a chance to notice all the smaller wonders of safari. The flowers, the birds and the noises and the scents of the bush, that are often never noticed until you are walking. We will also be able to spend time with some of the local tribespeople of the area, the Samburu. As Nomadic pastoralists they have small villages set up on a temporary basis so that they can follow the pastures for their cattle, which is their livelihood. With many different traditions and age-old customs we can learn much about life from them.

We normally set up camp just after midday, and have a gentle time in the heat of the afternoon. Delicious meals are cooked for us and we eat out under the stars of African skies.
FOUR NIGHTS, CAMEL WALK,
NORTHERN FRONTIER DISTRICT

DAY 8, 9, 10 & 11
Leaving our final fly camp and the camels today we will fly to the vast rolling plains of Masailand and the endless herds of game for which the Mara is famous. This is where you will re-join your original camp (the staff having packed up the many tons of equipment, loaded it onto the lorry and moved it a few hundred miles over the preceding couple of days). Here the game-viewing is always amazing and the chance of seeing a big cat in action is good. Patience is often rewarded with the incredible sight of lions springing from cover onto their prey or a cheetah racing along (at sixty mph.) hard on the heels of a fleet-footed gazelle. Sharp-eyed spotters on the roof of each vehicle increase the chance of such sightings. Amongst these teeming numbers of buffalo, topi, zebra, and gazelle are the Masai with their great herds of cattle. Evening walks beside our rocky stream are filled with the sounds and smells of Africa; scampering baboons and the loud snorting of impala, the thrill of getting close to elephant on foot and listening to their gentle rumblings. End each day with a fine dinner at a candlelit table, a glass of wine, pleasant stories by the fireside and then to bed with the roar of lions.
FOUR NIGHTS IN A PRIVATE CAMP,
MASAI MARA

Day 12
Leaving camp today, fly back to Nairobi for your onward flight home. Come out to our home in Karen and have dinner before you leave.
