DAY I, 1 NIGHT, KAREN BLIXEN COFFEE GARDENS
When you arrive in Kenya we will be at Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi to meet you and transfer you to the Karen Blixen Coffee Garden.
This is a small hotel set in pretty gardens next to the Karen Blixen Museum, comfortable rooms and spacious settings.
DAY 2,3 & 4 THREE NIGHTS ELEPHANT WATCH CAMP, SAMBURU NATIONAL
A schedule flight this morning north to Samburu National reserve and Elephant watch camp. Samburu is home to some of the largest elephant bulls and family herds and they can often be found mudding in the river, or resting under acacia trees picking up pods. This exotic camp is perched on the sand banks of the Ewaso Ngiro River, beneath wide spreading trees. The trees are filled with a multitude of birds and monkeys. The rooms are large and the bathrooms are built around a tree giving our guests a novel washing experience with painted buckets filled with sun-heated water (from the camp well) and watched over by spying monkeys from the treetop while you wrap up in a colourful kanga robe after a hot shower. Elephants are never far away, often within hot breathe distance - be careful! But Samburu warriors escort guests after dark and keep watch throughout the night. Elephant watching begins on arrival. The specialised guides will spend the next three days driving gently through the Reserve spending time with many of our well known elephant families as well as introducing them to some of the particular Northern inhabitants - the slim necked Gerenuk, Reticulated Giraffe, Grevy Zebras, Beisa Oryx, over 350 resident birds. Lions, leopard and cheetah can also be found in the park. While here you will have a chance to visit a local Samburu village and learn something of the culture of these wonderful nomadic pastorlists. You can also walk with your guides and learn about the medicinal properties of all the plants and trees as used by the Samburu.
Day 5 & 6 TWO NIGHTS AT BORANA LODGE, BORANA RANCH
A short charter flight south to Borana Lodge, hidden away on a large game ranch. It is set on a hilltop, looking down from the Laikipia Plateau. The buildings are truly unique in design, the exteriors taking their cue from the rugged setting, spacious cedar and stone thatched rooms all very originally furnished. There is a stunning swimming pool. As well as walking and driving on the ranch, visits can be made to the neighboring rhino sanctuary and horses are available so that one may ride amongst the giraffe and zebra, which are quite tame. A sortie may be made up on to the mountain for fly-fishing. The ranch itself has a good lion population and cheetah are sometimes seen. The elephant population is healthy here as well and wild dog are often seen.
DAY 7, 8 &9 – THREE NIGHTS, NAIBOR CAMP, MASAI MARA
This flight will take you out of the great rift valley and over the exquisitely green rolling hills of the tea growing district before reaching the vast rolling plains of Masailand. Land here amidst the endless herds of game for which the Mara is famous. The game viewing is always amazing and the chance of seeing a big cat in action is good. Patience is often rewarded with the incredible sight of lions springing from cover onto their prey or a cheetah racing along (at sixty mph.) hard on the heels of a fleet-footed gazelle. Plenty of scampering baboons and the loud snorting of impala, the thrill of getting close to elephant and listening to their gentle rumblings. End each day with a fine dinner and pleasant stories by the fireside and then to bed with the roar of lions. The camp has large spacious airy tents with fully plumbed bathrooms behind, enormous beds and a dining room overlooking the hippo pool in the river.
DAY 10
At mid-morning return by air to Nairobi. Here you will be met and (unless you prefer to book day rooms at an hotel) driven to our house to leave your luggage. You will have time in the afternoon for shopping and to rest and wash and supper with us there
