Put the finishing
touches to your safari at a resort on the Indian Ocean Coast.
THE INDIAN OCEAN COAST
Kenya and Tanzania
Should you wish to visit the coast after your safari, for a few days of total relaxation and rest, there are many beautiful places where you can stay. Here are a few ideas:
THE DELTA
Situated north of Malindi, the Tana River delta is one of the last remaining wilderness areas on the whole of the East African coast. This is where the African bush meets the Indian Ocean. Beach-combing expeditions are interspersed with bird watching and boat trips down the maze of estuarine channels. You can surf in the morning and stalk the buffalo in the afternoon. Go water skiing, sand yachting down the 30 miles of empty beach, wind surfing, fishing or just relax by the pool. Set on top of the sand dunes, this pool has a spectacular 360 degree view from the ocean to the inland waterways.
Our dune cottages are large and very comfortable, made of all local materials with huge nets hung over large double beds made of driftwood. Bathrooms with hot and cold running water are en-suite. The cottages are kept cool by the trade winds from the ocean. The forest tents are also very comfortable set up under palm thatch roofs with bathrooms attached. They are nestled in a grove of shady indigenous trees with great views across the estuary. SeeTana River Delta Camp
Lamu Island
This is an ancient Arab town with narrow winding streets, a huge fort which is now a museum, mosques and beautiful Swahili architecture. There are no cars on the island and you must either walk or brave the small donkeys used by the local people. Just out of town on the seaward side of the island is Peponi Hotel. This is a wonderful hotel, and a great place to find the tranquillity and calm that is not in the town. From here all water sports are available. There are also several other hotels and private homes to rent in Lamu.
Mombasa and the rest of the Kenyan coast.
Mombasa is the second largest town in Kenya and is now a large city. The historic old town is still worth a visit, with the dhow harbour still in service. There are many hotels along this stretch of coast and information can be forwarded on request
Zanzibar - Tanzania
This is a large island off the coast of Tanzania; the spice island, famous for the large amounts of cloves that are grown there. The oldest part of the city is known as Stone Town and it has some wonderful architecture, with examples from the time of the Sultans of Oman until today. There are some great hotels in the town and many beautiful places on the island. Long white beaches and crystal clear water make it a wonderful holiday location.
