The morning like doves to come

This exhibition is dedicated to Mouse and Charlie McConnell and Janet Hurt, with whom I have watched the dawn in Shaba, Meru, the Mara and the Tana Delta. In the last few years, I have had the pleasure of going on safari with Robin Hurt Safaris when they have needed the services of a bird shooting guide.

These trips were the only time that I have walked into a camp that I did not set up myself and have sat down in the mess tent to waiter service, five star cuisine and five star views to match.

As a guide, I have had to fall into a routine, rising before dawn to drive one of the wagons into the African sunrise to show clients the landscape, the animals and listen to instructions over the radio and not get lost and anxious about the breakfast rendezvous as the sun gets hot.

The clients may stand on the seats and lean out of roof hatches to take in the scenery, tilting the vehicle’s centre of gravity. But it is important not to rock the boat.

On shooting days it’s easier as we get down to business right away. The kitchen comes along with us in special boxes; fires are lit and the fast is broken under thorn trees. There is also Sandgrouse on the menu.

I would like to say that I have seen the sunrise all of my days but I haven’t. But when I do, I always think “Why don’t I do this every day?”.

Some people may remember my watercolours of Mount Kenya painted as the sun was coming up. I used to drive up Lunatic Lane onto a ranch to face the mountain. But this is now a flower farm and who wants to see the sun rise over plastic green houses?

This exhibition, however, is about dawn over unspoilt nature and is called “the Morning Light”. Mouse, Charlie and Janet, this collection of paintings is for you.

I worked in a timber yard where I met an artist from Ngecha village, Wanyu Brush who introduced me to art. I lived with him for six months and learnt a lot about mixing of colours and the art scene as a whole. Since then, I have participated in many workshops and exhibitions in many venues.

At the moment, my work is about my surrounding and  the places I visit which I illustrate in abstract forms. The colours I use are only what gives me satisfaction with disregard to what traditional reference they are associated with. I have also gone into a new style to distinguish myself from those who have been keenly mimicking what I have always painted - faces.

I hope you come and enjoy what new revelation I have
