22nd June and 23rd June, 2012
Leave home and travel over the weekend via London (or Amsterdam), arriving on Sunday in Kenya. We will be at Jomo Kenyatta Airport in Nairobi to meet you on arrival and, once the brief formalities are completed, to take you to a hotel. The Fairview Hotel is set just outside the city centre and is very comfortable, with lovely gardens and comfortable rooms.
24th, 25th, & 26th June, 2012
3 nights Private Camp Shaba National Reserve
Leaving Nairobi, set off on safari, flying by schedule flight north past the massive peaks of Mt. Kenya to the drier little-inhabited bush country beyond. Touch down on a dusty runway in Shaba Game Reserve where a private tented camp will have been set up ready for you in an idyllic spot beside the Uaso Nyiro river. Glorious days are spent here photographing the varied wildlife. Well known for its elephant and many northern game species such as Beisa oryx, Grevy zebra, kudu, gerenuk and reticulated giraffe, most big predators including lion can be seen in Shaba. The biggest challenge is to spot the rare striped hyaena. In the midst of this most spectacular scenery one can also see something of the fascinating age-old traditions practised by various local tribespeople, especially the Borana and Meru, nearby. This is something that future generations may not see. All drives are in very comfortable, well-equipped 4-wheel drive vehicles (there is cushioned seating even on the roof). Stretch your legs with a good brisk walk along the river, watching out for thirsty wild creatures, and then back to camp for a most delicious meal. Our food is quite cosmopolitan and many different tastes can be catered for. Only fresh fruit and vegetables are served. At night enjoy an ice-cold drink by the camp-fire and dinner under the stars before retiring to huge, insect-proof tents with comfortable double beds and crisp linen.
27th & 28th June, 2012
2 NIGHTS BORANA LODGE , LAIKIPIA
A drive south today to Borana Lodge, hidden away on a large game ranch. It is set on a hilltop, looking down from the Laikipia Plateau. The buildings are truly unique in design, the exteriors taking their cue from the rugged setting, spacious cedar and stone thatched rooms all very originally furnished. There is a stunning swimming pool. As well as walking and driving on the ranch, visits can be made to the neighbouring rhino sanctuary and horses are available so that one may ride amongst the giraffe and zebra, which are quite tame. A sortie may be made up on to the mountain for fly-fishing. The ranch itself has a good lion population and cheetah are sometimes seen. The elephant population is healthy here as well and wild dog are often seen.
29th 30th June, 1st & 2nd July, 2012
4 NIGHTS, PRIVATE CAMP MASAI MARA
Today you will fly on a schedule flight over the great rift valley and over the exquisitely green rolling hills of the tea growing district before reaching the vast rolling plains of Masailand. Land here amidst the endless herds of game for which the Mara is famous. The game viewing is always amazing and the chance of seeing a big cat in action is good. Patience is often rewarded with the incredible sight of lions springing from cover onto their prey or a cheetah racing along (at sixty mph.) hard on the heels of a fleet-footed gazelle. Plenty of scampering baboons and the loud snorting of impala, the thrill of getting close to elephant and listening to their gentle rumblings. Your private luxury camp and crew will have moved across the country and be set up for you on a lovely bend in the Talek River, just above a hippo pool. A chance to take an early morning ride in a balloon (not included) and have a birdseye view of the vast plains and all the wildlife.
3rd July, 2012
A last early breakfast in camp and then we will drive through Masai land to the rift valley and cross over climbing the escarpment wall just outside Nairobi. A quick shower and a light supper with us, before your homeward flight.
The cost of this safari will be US$ 8900 per person with a minimum of 3 guests
