THREE NIGHTS IN A PRIVATE TENTED CAMP, SHABA

Shaba CampLeaving Nairobi, in the early morning, set off on safari, north past the massive peaks of Mt. Kenya to the drier little-inhabited bush country beyond. In the afternoon we would arrive in Shaba Game Reserve where a private tented camp will have been set up ready for you in an idyllic spot beside the Uaso Nyiro river. Three full days are spent here photographing the varied wildlife. Shaba is well known for its elephant and many northern game species such as Beisa oryx, Grevy zebra, kudu, gerenuk and reticulated giraffe. Most big predators including lion can be seen in Shaba, but the biggest challenge is to spot the rare striped hyaena.
In the midst of this most spectacular scenery one can also see something of the fascinating age-old traditions practised by various local tribespeople, especially the Borana and Meru, nearby. This is something that future generations may not see.
All drives are in very comfortable, well-equipped 4-wheel drive vehicles (there is cushioned seating even on the roof). Stretch your legs with a good brisk walk along the river, watching out for thirsty wild creatures, and then back to camp for a most delicious meal. Our food is cosmopolitan and most tastes can be catered for. Freshest fruit and vegetables are served. At night enjoy an ice-cold drink by the camp-fire and dinner under the stars before retiring to huge, insect-proof tents with comfortable double beds and crisp linen

4th October, 2011
ONE NIGHT AT SABUK LODGE, LAIKIPIA PLATEAU

Leaving Shaba this morning we would drive north west to Sabuk. Kenya is renowned for its rugged beauty and the diversity not only of its wildlife, but also of its fierce nomadic tribes. You can experience all of this at closer quarters at Sabuk. Here you can head out on foot with camels to explore the vast expanses of Northern Kenya, spending the day with these remarkably patient beasts of burden. Encounters with elephants and splendidly dressed tribesmen do not detract from the pleasure of tiny flowers nestled in the grass and basking lizards on lichen-coated rocks. Choose to spend the night in the lodge here, or sleeping out under the stars beside the river with the camels sleeping nearby or quietly browsing around you.

5th October, 2011
ONE NIGHT AT DELORAINE HOUSE, RIFT VALLEY

Driving west round the foothills of the Aberdares, the land finally drops away into the great Rift Valley and the lush farmland near Menengai, to Deloraine. Built in 1920 by Lord Francis Scott, a prominent early settler, this house is one of the grandest examples of colonial architecture in the country. Accommodating up to ten people in the style of earlier centuries, it looks out over magnificent gardens boasting a croquet lawn and secret walks. The food is excellent with homegrown vegetables and the wine flows freely at table. It is set in the middle of a five thousand acre farm, on the slopes of Londiani Mountain, a forest and bamboo shrouded volcano, a few miles from Lake Nakuru with its millions of flamingos. There are dozens of horses here; the farm and the mountain providing more than adequate countryside to explore.

6th, 7th, 8th & 9th October, 2011
FOUR NIGHTS IN A PRIVATE CAMP, MASAI MARA

Leaving in the morning, we will leave the rift valley and we will take you over the exquisitely green rolling hills of the tea growing district before reaching the vast rolling plains of Masailand. Land here amidst the endless herds of game for which the Mara is famous. This is where you will re-join your camp (the staff having packed up the many tons of equipment, loaded it onto the lorry and moved it a few hundred miles over the preceding couple of days). Here the game viewing is always amazing and the chance of seeing a big cat in action is good. Patience is often rewarded with the incredible sight of lions springing from cover onto their prey or a cheetah racing along (at sixty mph.) hard on the heels of a fleet-footed gazelle. Sharp-eyed spotters on the roof of each vehicle increase the chance of such sightings. Amongst these teeming numbers of buffalo, topi, zebra, and gazelle are the Masai with their great herds of cattle. Evening walks beside our rocky stream are filled with the sounds and smells of Africa; scampering baboons and the loud snorting of impala, the thrill of getting close to elephant on foot and listening to their gentle rumblings. End each day with a fine dinner and pleasant stories by the fireside and then to bed with the roar of lions.

10thOctober, RETURN HOME
After breakfast in camp we will drive back to Nairobi in time for a late lunch at our house in Karen, some last minute shopping stay for the evening, and have dinner with us. Depart later for the airport and your onward flight.
