Charlie McConnell
Charlie
was born in the Seychelles, and came to Kenya at the age of four. His
parents had bought a beautiful farm in the foothills of Mount Kenya. Huge
cedar forests bordered the farm and he and his sisters spent many hours
playing and learning about the flora and fauna of Kenya. After a short
service in the Royal Navy he worked for his brother-in-law Robin Hurt,
helping to arrange safaris in the Sudan. He then worked as apprentice
to Miles Burton, a well-known safari operator. In 1981 he joined Robin
Hurt's safari company. He has run the photographic side of this business
since then. Charlie's interest in all things on safari make him an enthusiastic
guide, his infectious fascination with everything from the huge elephants
to the smallest harvester ants will give you a better understanding of
the wilds of Africa. Charlie is married to Mouse, who works with him in
their safari business. He is busy training his three children, who are
often on safari with him, to drive, track animals, pour cocktails, mend
equipment in the field, and to learn the traditions and customs of the
local tribespeople.
Mouse McConnell
A
third generation Kenyan, Mouse's grandparents originally came from England
to settle in the Colony of Kenya. Brought up on a farm with her two brothers,
she spent many hours riding horses and exploring the surrounding areas.
After schooling in Kenya she was sent to France to train as a chef. On
completion of her training she returned to Kenya and went to work producing
delicious food at small camp in the Masai Mara. Here she fell in love
with safari life and began to learn all about the bush, the animals, the
birds and the people, their customs and traditions. On her return to Nairobi
she joined the company and now works as a guide with Charlie. Their three
children are at school in Kenya and they come on many safaris during the
holidays.
Tim Tucker
Working
with us on a seasonal basis, Tim is a very experienced guide. He was born
and brought up in Kenya and finished his education abroad. He is very
knowledgeable on the wildlife, the birds and botany of Kenya. Tim also
has a great understanding of the country's colonial history and the early
explorers. He has undertaken several walking trips following in the footsteps
of some of the early explorers, to better understand the past and the
very places they visited. He is a true gentleman and is married to a lovely
woman called Nicky, who oversees fund raising for the Flying Doctor Society,
AMREF.
Janet
Hurt
Charlie McConnell's sister
Janet grew up with him on their farm in the foothills of Mt Kenya. Together
with her husband Robin Hurt she set up the company in the Seventies. Janet
ran the Nairobi base for 20 years. With her three children she spent a
fair amount of time in the bush on safari with Robin in Kenya, Tanzania,
Sudan, Congo and Zambia. Janet still takes out the occasional safari and
when not in Kenya, she is exploring more of Africa, undertaking expeditions
across the Sahara and the Namib deserts, and is a fund of knowledge about
all the different African tribes and cultures.
Murray
Levet
Murray has an amazing ability
to find game and is always interested in showing you new things. When
not on safari he is busy designing some of the most stunning and famous
wildlife lodges in East Africa. His keen understanding of both art and
nature makes him a more than usually fascinating guide. Murray's after
dinner stories are legendary and should always be taken with a large pinch
of salt! Murray is single and will make you laugh.
Chris
Trent
Chris was born and brought
up on a large cattle and game ranch in the north of Kenya. Because of
the many hours he spent tracking animals then and more recently in Tanzania,
he has a deep knowledge of their habits and is therefore very good at
finding wildlife and explaining their behavior. His love of the outdoors
and his understanding of the animals make all safaris with Chris greatly
entertaining. Chris is married to Sarah and they live in Nairobi when
not on safari.
Pierre Burton
Pierre
was born and bought up in the safari world, and spent his childhood following
his father, Miles Burton, on safari. He finished his education in Switzerland
with a diploma in tourism. He now spends all his time in the bush, running
seasonal camps when he is not on mobile safaris. He is very knowledgeable
and competent on safari. He has a great way with children and always manages
to teach them more about nature than they realize. Pierre is single and
great fun on safari.
James Ndii
James
is one of our best ornithological guides, and has experience with film
crews as well as private travellers. Self-trained, James started his safari
career with us many years ago. He has since gone on to work for some of
the larger safari companies as a guide and is highly sought after. His
experience with wildlife documentaries helps him to find exactly the right
animal in the right place and to make sure you have the right light for
your photos! James is a married with three children.
Alex Hunter
Born to a family, famous for their work with wildlife and conservation in Kenya, Alex has all the enthusiasm, knowledge, and first hand experience needed to be a first rate safari guide.
His grandfather, J A Hunter, who wrote several books on hunting in Africa early in the last century, came from Scotland to seek adventure. Alex has certainly fufilled his grandfathers dream and lead many different safaris, from walking in the Selous in Southern Tanzania, rafting down the Rufigi river, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, and leading camel trips in Northern Kenya. Working with us on a free lance basis Alex is happy to take safaris anywhere.
Alex is unmarried and lives in Nairobi when he is not on safari.
