Tana Delta Camp

On the fabled Kenya Coast, between the resort area of Lamu and Malindi, lies a vast wilderness area, the TANA DELTA.

On a sandy dune-bound estuary, with miles of beach stretching away to the horizon north and south, tucked away in a wild-palm filled valley is a haven for would-be castaways, TANA DELTA CAMP.

A small exclusive camp with the feel of a bush home rather than a hotel, Tana Delta offers you the conveniences you need to explore the fascinating coast and hinterland that surrounds you.

On the north of the island, next to the main river, is the Ozi Forest, home to herds of buffalo and elephants. Hippo and crocodile are to be found in the delta, but primarily it is a spectacular bird area.

We explore the delta using motorised canoes, although kayaks are also available for self-propelled expeditions. Sea fishing is available, while coral atolls can be visited for snorkelling as a half-day expedition. The creek is ideal for water-skiing.

The island is ideal for walking and beach combing with it's immense beach and wild sand dunes where bush buck and buffalo may be seen, along with many other small mammals.

The oasis in this wilderness is the camp. For honeymooners in search of privacy there is a marvellous eyrie with magnificent views over the estuary and the delta beyond.

Refreshments and meals are enjoyed in our two messes - the lower a repository of treasures collected from the beach over many years, a perfect place for candle-lit dinners while watching our resident genet cats.

The top mess is an extraordinary pagoda built of drift-wood and palm-thatch with 360 degree views over the ocean, the estuary, the island and the delta - a superb setting to enjoy sea-food lunches while cooled by the mid-day breeze.

Our kitchen harvests from the sea - fresh fish, crab, prawns daily, complemented with the freshest vegetables and tropical fruit. For longer stay visitors, expeditions down the main river to the Pokomo Villages of Kau and Ozi may be arranged to buy beautiful coloured hand-woven mats. Alternatively a three hour journey to the Tana River Primate Reserve rakes you to the home of the Tana River Mangabey - an endemic monkey species occurring nowhere else. The Primate Reserve is a naturalist's paradise - ground-water forest next to the river full of interesting birds and mammals and perfect for a fly-camp for a day or two away from the Coast.

Robinson Crusoe would have felt at home at Tana Delta Camp except he didn't have the conveniences of running water, flushing loos and ice for his cocktails.

Welcome to a truly remote island paradise.
